Whiskies For A Cool Day

Malaysian weather can blow hot and cold (mostly hot, if we’re honest). But on the occasions when the weather turns cool, it’s nice to kick back on the porch and take in the moment while it lasts. Here are my 5 top cool weather drams, in no particular order of preference.

Glenfarclas 15 Year Old (46% abv)

This is the whisky that I sip when I’m in need of being wrapped by a warm fuzzy blanket. Fruit cake sweet spice, raisins and chocolate that can solve any problems, and given the chance, I’m sure could bring world peace .

Duncan Taylor’s Octave Premium Cragganmore 1990 30 Year Old (48.5% abv)

A precious Cragganmore from indie bottler Duncan Taylor, this is full of warm, rich and dark sherry notes – without any sulphury elements. Where this whisky excels, however, is how it provides what is called the ‘hallelujah moment’ on cue every single time.

The ‘hallelujah moment’ is when you sip a dram, and it dries up your mouth, and then in 1-2 seconds, water returns to the sides of your mouth filling it with flavour (in this case, dried fruit sweetness).

963 Sasanokawa Shuzo 21 Year Old (58% abv)

This Ji-Whisky (a name the Japanese give to whiskies produced by small local and distilleries) has an outrageous cask strength of 58% and gives you this nice thick chewy mouthfeel. Seldom seen outside of Japan, this rare beauty glides like silk down in spite of its high strength. Perhaps too dangerously easy to finish in the cool weather.

Carn Mor Strictly Limited Ardmore 2013, 7 Year Old Islay Cask (47.5% abv)

This peated Highland has been matured in an Islay cask. I like the youthful, vibrant energetic briny smoke in this dram that makes you want to celebrate dreary skies.

Bunnahabhain Toiteach A Dha (46.3% abv)

Brimming with peat, roasted nuts, blackcurrants and warm fruits, no grey-day whisky list can be complete without this whisky. Although its unaged, there is a comforting old school Islay feel about this whisky.
