Distilled at the Balmenach distillery in 2012, this single malt whisky was matured in Oloroso sherry casks for ten years before it was bottled in 2023. Utilising highly traditional, old-style distillation methods that yield a heavy, rich spirit, it is non-chill filtered and presented with its natural colour. The result is a single malt that’s beautifully rich with toasted hot cross buns, candied orange peel, raisins, and gentle baking spices.
Tasting notes
NOSE: Bursting with roasted nuts, dried figs, and dark brown sugar. Nice aroma also meatiness, in particular roasted gammon.
PALATE: A dense body reveals layers of buttery, warm hot cross buns fresh from the oven, sweet candied orange peel, plump raisins, and an array of gentle baking spices like nutmeg and ginger on a roasted gammon.
FINISH: Long and dry, accented by dark cocoa, tobacco leaf and rich European oak tannins.

Càrn Mòr independent release showcases Balmenach—a Speyside distillery renowned among whisky purists for maintaining old-school, traditional distillation techniques, including the use of traditional copper worm tubs. This method retains a heavy, muscular, and sulfur-free meaty character in the raw spirit that pairs perfectly with intense cask aging.
Not many Balmenach have made its way into Malaysia so it is a nice chance to try whiskies from this distillery.
