The Old-Fashioned Cocktail: Now Made Even Easier
The bars may be closed (and hopefully not for long more), but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy a simple cocktail or two at home. Among the easiest cocktail to make is the Old Fashioned: the standard-bearer for many bartenders that's made using a good whiskey, Angostura bitters, sugar, and a twist of orange peel.
For those at lazing at home, the folks at Angostura came up with a lazy man's rum-based version of the Old Fashioned, using just three ingredients: Angostura rum, Amaro di Angostura, and a strip of orange peel.
The key to making this Old Fashioned stand out from the rest is the Amaro di Angostura. Unlike the regular Angostura bitters that we're familiar with, Amaro di Angostura is made by combining its original aromatic bitters with a neutral spirit, more spices and herbs, before being left to marry for three months. The result is a liqueur that's rich and complex, with flavours of chocolate, cinnamon, toasted caramel, as well as bitter and liquorice notes -- creating a beautifully rich rum-based Old Fashioned using the least bit of effort.
